Growing our skills at Nutgrove

Nutgrove is located at within the Sandy Bay Infant School and caters for children aged from 3 to 5 years. We are very fortunate to be located adjacent to Nutgrove Reserve and Nutgrove Beach, which we visit for walks, games and to explore the natural environment with our friends in fresh air and sunshine.

Establishing positive relationships with educators and peers, continuing to build self help skills, learning to be part of a group, developing independence and school readiness are all considered when planning the Nutgrove program. Experiences are planned based on observations of individual children’s developmental stage and interests. The curriculum emerges and evolves this way over the year. Individually focussed activities compliment activities planned for whole or small group participation, giving children a wide range of experiences over a year.

Nutgrove activities include early literacy and numeracy activities, structured and unstructured physical play, art and craft, cooking, music, dancing, multicultural experiences, and local and wider community excursions.

The Environment

The program flows between the indoor and outdoor environments providing children with choice about their play. This is only limited by the routine of the Sandy Bay Infant School day as “Nutgrovers” stay indoors while the school children are outside for recess and lunch breaks. Safety is very important to us. We are fortunate to have direct access to Nutgrove reserve and Nutgrove Beach which are a close excursion that feels like extended playground.

Preparation for formal school life happens naturally through attendance at the Nutgrove program. Nutgrove educators work to ensure a smooth transition to formal school life. Connections remain strong and are supported with availability of After Kindergarten and After School care on site.

A calendar of outings is available by February each year and includes regularly scheduled visits to the LINC (Library), Kingborough Sports Centre and Hobart PCYC for Kinder gym. Visits to the Botanical Gardens, Museum, local parks and other places of interest are also included in our program. Of course there is choice as to whether your child attends and we encourage parent participation!

Jo and the Nutgrove team look forward to meeting you soon.
